Cantora e compositora
Vera Morais é uma cantora e improvisadora/compositora natural do Porto. O seu trabalho situa-se entre a música improvisada, o avant-jazz e a música contemporânea, sendo os seus principais pontos de interesse nestas músicas a permeabilidade entre composição e improvisação e as possibilidades extra-convencionais da voz a nível sónico e expressivo. Está atualmente sediada entre o Porto e Amsterdam (Países Baixos).
Apresenta-se regularmente em duo com o saxofonista Hristo Goleminov, com quem editou o álbum “Consider the Plums” (Carimbo Porta-Jazz, 2022); e com o trio Novelo Vago – um toy ensemble que co-lidera com a flautista Teresa Costa e a pianista Inês Lopes – com quem editou o álbum “Live in Porto: a protest in the form of an album” de forma independente em 2023.
Em fevereiro de 2024 estreou um novo ensemble a convite do 14o Festival Porta-Jazz, e com quem editou o álbum “é apenas um pouco tarde” (Carimbo Porta-Jazz). Encontra-se neste momento a trabalhar no álbum de estreia de EUPNEA, o seu ensemble de vozes e flautas.
É também cocriadora de dois projetos interdisciplinares: o coletivo LIÇO (com Mariana Anacleto, Teresa Costa, Beatriz Lerer Castelo e Diana Gil), e a performance “Galatea” (em colaboração com a cravista Katerina Orfanoudaki, a saxofonista Nicky Kokkoli, a cantora Maria Kritsotaki e a artista visual/ceramista Klaudia Kazmierczak).
Dirige o Queer Choir Amsterdam – uma iniciativa artística e social fundada pelxs artistas Rah Naqvi, Shreya de Souza e Mylou Oord – e é co-curadora do ciclo de concertos Improbellissimo com Raoul van der Weide. Integra também o coletivo Orbits, com quem organizou em abril de 2024 um festival de música criativa em Amesterdão.
Estudou no Conservatório de Música do Porto, na Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (Politécnico do Porto) e no Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Em 2024 foi recipiente do prémio “Artista Revelação” da RTP/Festa do Jazz.
Vera Morais is a singer and improviser/composer from Porto. Her work lies between improvised music, avant-jazz, and contemporary music. Within these fields, her main points of interest are the permeability between composition and improvisation, and the extra-conventional possibilities of the voice in both sonic and expressive terms. She is currently based between Porto and Amsterdam (The Netherlands).
She performs regularly in a duo with saxophonist Hristo Goleminov, with whom she released the album Consider the Plums (Carimbo Porta-Jazz, 2022); and with the trio Novelo Vago – a toy ensemble she co-leads with flautist Teresa Costa and pianist Inês Lopes – with whom she independently released the album Live in Porto: a protest in the form of an album in 2023.
In February 2024, she premiered a new ensemble at the invitation of the 14th Porta-Jazz Festival, with whom she released the album é apenas um pouco tarde (Carimbo Porta-Jazz). She is currently working on the debut album of EUPNEA, her ensemble of voices and flutes.
She is also co-creator of two interdisciplinary projects: the collective LIÇO (with Mariana Anacleto, Teresa Costa, Beatriz Lerer Castelo, and Diana Gil), and the performance Galatea (in collaboration with harpsichordist Katerina Orfanoudaki, saxophonist Nicky Kokkoli, singer Maria Kritsotaki, and visual artist/ceramicist Klaudia Kazmierczak).
She directs the Queer Choir Amsterdam – an artistic and social initiative founded by artists Rah Naqvi, Shreya de Souza, and Mylou Oord – and co-curates the concert series Improbellissimo with Raoul van der Weide. She is also part of the collective Orbits, with whom she organised a festival of creative music in Amsterdam in April 2024.
She studied at the Conservatório de Música do Porto, at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo (Polytechnic Institute of Porto), and at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In 2024, she received the “New Artist” award from RTP/Festa do Jazz.
